OAS AND COLOMBIA KICK START THE SUMMIT OF THE AMERICAS PROCESS FOR 2012

The Organization of American States (OAS) and the government of Colombia on Thursday kick started the process towards the Summit of the Americas 2012 in the meeting of the Joint Summit Working Group (JSWG), held at OAS Headquarters in Washington, DC.

The meeting, hosted by OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza and co-chaired by the Vice Minister of Foreign Relations of Colombia, Clemencia Forero Ucros, was attended by representatives from the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB), the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO), the International Organization for Migrations (IOM), the International Labor Office (ILO) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). All international organizations in the JSWG expressed their full support to the Colombian hosts of the Summit.

SUMMITS CHAIRMANSHIP TRANSFERRED TO COLOMBIA

His Excellency Jaime Bermudez Merizalde and The Honourable Paula Gopee-ScoonThe formal transfer of the chairmanship of the Summits of the Americas Process, on September 21, 2009, was marked by the passing of the statue “Inukshuk”, by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, the Honourable Paula Gopee-Scoon, to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Colombia, His Excellency Jaime Bermudez Merizalde. This statue, a landmark that was created by the Inuit peoples of North America, was described by Minister Gopee-Scoon as “a symbol of guidance, cooperation and the unity of our peoples”.
