Mandates and Follow Up to the Third Summit of the Americas

On April 20-22, 2001, the 34 democratically elected heads of State and Government from the Americas met in historic Quebec City for the Third Summit of the Americas. This Summit culminates a three-year preparatory process that has included the participation of member States,  International Organizations, Financial Institutions and Civil Society Organizations.

At the Quebec City Summit, leaders addressed common hemispheric issues and challenges that were identified as a result of this three-year process. These included improved access to education, poverty alleviation, strengthening human rights and democracy and economic integration.  The consideration of these themes and the resulting Declaration of Quebec City and Plan of Action will help determine the region's priorities and goals for the upcoming years.

The Quebec City Summit and the Summit Process

The Quebec City Summit of the Americas is considered the third of a series of Summits which have taken place since the first took place in Miami, Florida, in 1994.  The Summit process has been evolving since then to incorporate more voices and more issues.

The Summit Implementation Review Group (SIRG), the OAS' Special Committee on Inter-American Summits Management (CEGCI) and Civil Society Organizations have all been instrumental in shaping the commitments that will emerge from the Third Summit of the Americas.  Below you will find some examples of the input that has been contributed to the process.
