Meeting of the Joint Summit Working Group (JSWG) to discuss work towards the Fifth Summit

On February 26, 2007, the Joint Summit Working Group (JSWG) met in Washington D.C. with the goal of exploring collaboration mechanisms in preparation for the upcoming Fifth Summit of the Americas.  The day’s events opened with a working breakfast for the JSWG members with the Secretary General of the OAS, José Miguel Insulza.

Ambassador Carmen Marina Gutierrez, who previously served as Director of the Department for Follow Up, Policies, and Programs of the Organization of American States, was appointed as Director of the Summits of the Americas Secretariat in January of 2007.

 

To commemorate International Women’s Day, March 8, 2007 in Washington, D.C., the Summits of the Americas Secretariat participated in the celebration organized by the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO), during which it delivered a message on how to construct an integral gender vision within the framework of the Summits Process.  Also, the”Women in the Americas: Paths to Political Participation” event took place at the Library of Congress, during which the Secretariat highlighted the need to create an architecture of inclusion in the hemisphere.

The OAS Secretary General, Jose Miguel Insulza, participated in the opening ceremony of the XLV Meeting of the Summit Implementation Review Group (SIRG), which was held on March 29, 2007 in Washington DC. The Secretary General Insulza explained that “the Summits of the Americas, of Heads of State and Government, constitute the most important regional forum and the principal guide of our hemispheric cooperation policy.” At the same time, he added that the next Summit will be fundamentally important because it will provide an overview of the regional agenda and show “how we can move forward into the future in carrying out our tasks.
